Dream Cast: Mind Games

castingSometimes I find my muses on the catwalk rather than the TV, so I can’t attest to the acting abilities of some of my pics. None the less, if Mind Games were to need a cast, this is who I’d envision.

Excerpt (from the ARC):

I pulled up to the crime scene, a farm property in the middle of nowhere, and parked my SUV next to a State Trooper’s cruiser.

The one thing I loved about crime scenes is the amount of people who gather around them. We’ll feign terror and true desire to know what happened, but in reality we are curious as to what kind of creature or person would commit such a crime.  Human curiosity was disgusting. This scene lacked that. How odd.

A tall man started towards the yellow crime scene. His hair was cropped close to his head giving no hint to the color. His black jacket had his detective shield attached to it.

“Bout’ time you got here Abigail.” He’s blue eyes met my gaze. “I was starting to think you were going to chicken out.”

“Yeah, not an option.” I shrugged and ducked under the crime scene tape. “Where are the gawkers?”

“No idea. Just the lady whose dog found the body. Corpse’s been out here for a couple days at least.”

Great. That meant it was going to smell. “And the markings you want me to take a look at?”

“Are all over the barn walls. That’s all I’m going to tell you.” He started walking towards a barn in the distance. My long legs were great for treading through the tall unkempt weeds that had taken over the area. The uneven ground made it a struggle to keep balanced, but there was no way I’d let myself fall. I already caught enough flack out on the field, being a witch and a woman.

I grumbled as we got to the barn and scrunched up my nose. “Oh God.” The smell churned my stomach and it was times like this I wish that I had a spell or something to mask it.

An officer at the door handed me a facemask and then motioned for me to go in. I walked in and looked around. A tarp covered a lump that I imagined was the body, dried blood coated the packed dirt floor and it looked like whatever it was had exploded. Well, that explained the arm.

I tried to focus as my gaze crawled up the wall. Symbols were scattered over the wall drawn in something black and I could see the faint glowing of whatever magic it held.

I frowned and pulled out my phone taking pictures of them. “They’re still active.”

“How do you know that?”

“Because I’m trained in magic. I can see the power behind the marks.” I took a few more pictures.

“You can’t take pictures, Abby.”

“I don’t know them on sight, I’m going to have to do some research.” Hopefully the camera could capture the symbols without going haywire. A chill went down my spine and I cursed at the feeling of malevolent magic being activated.

“Get out, get out!” I shoved at Detective Mason and ran out after him. I felt the magic trail after me and I cursed. Grabbing Mason and the uniform at the door, I held on to their wrists and muttered a protection spell under my breath. In my mind I envisioned a purple circle and threw my energy into that vision to make it manifest.

The barn exploded the moment my circle went up. Shrapnel flew around us and the blast was hot enough to feel through the purple haze of my magic. Had I not managed to get my circle up, we’d be crispy humans. Holy shit. When the smoke cleared all that was left was a smoking pile of wood and the smell of burnt flesh in the air. I let the circle down when I felt the magic in the air fade.

“What the hell was that?” Mason snapped spinning me around to face him.

“Magic. Strong, terrifying magic.” I took a deep shuttering breath and pulled my own magic back into me.

A World Apart by L.J.K. Oliva

Blurb:

“There are things that go bump in the night, Mr. MacMillian. It’s my job to bump back.”

Private investigator Jesper MacMillian was sure he’d seen it all. After all, in a city like San Francisco, strange is what’s for breakfast. Following a long recovery after a horrific accident, his life is finally the way he wants it- or at least, close enough. The only monsters on his radar are the ones that keep him awake at night.

All that changes the day he meets Lena Alan.

Before MacMillian has a chance to brace for impact, Lena drags him into a world where monsters aren’t just real, they’re hiding in plain sight. Suddenly, everything he knows is suspect, starting with his current case. For Lena, a medium since childhood, it’s just another day at the office.

For MacMillian, it’s the beginning of the end of everything he thinks he knows.

Excerpt:

Lena snapped her fingers in front of his face. “Hey. Earth to Jimmy. I don’t host pity parties here. Maybe your grandma was on to something, maybe not. Regardless, I think we have a bigger problem.”

He gave her a blank look.

She rolled her eyes. “Somebody killed you, you lug.”

Jimmy grimaced. “Right.”

“Any idea who it was?”

He thought for a moment. “No. Never saw their face. Don’t even remember what happened, really. Not until, well, you know.” He winced down at his chest.

Lena fought back a shudder. “Yeah, I’d probably try to forget that, too. But think for a second. If you can tell me where your body is, maybe we can figure out who killed you. At the very least, I can get it back to your family. They’ll probably want to give you a proper send-off, right?”

“Yeah.” His eyes started to shimmer. “Yeah, they probably will.” He paused, and his gaze sharpened. “Hey, you can give them a message for me, right?”

“Sure.” Lena pulled her robe tighter. “I could do that.”

“Just, I dunno, tell my folks I love them. And tell my brothers to quit giving our dále such a hard time. And maybe you could tell my mamío-” He stopped. A confused look flitted across his features.

Lena waited. “Yes?”

Jimmy’s lips parted. “What the…”

Lena took a step forward. “Jimmy?”

But he wasn’t looking at her anymore. He stared off into the Veil, mesmerized by something she couldn’t see. Then his eyes went wide. Horror infused his face. He dropped into a crouch and covered his head with his hands. “No! Go away! I don’t want- just leave me alone!”

Lena strengthened her shields. At the same time, she reached out. Energy was all over the room: Jimmy’s, hers, even energy from the last couple who had lived there. She could feel it when she focused, crackling all around her like a broken net of superheated thread.

She gathered each individual strand, willed the energy to flow into her. Her hands started to tingle. “Jimmy? Just stay close to me. I can protect-”

Jimmy’s eyes rolled back in his head. He let out a shriek that chilled her to her core, and disappeared.

Friday Five: Yard Sales

This past weekend I hit up the yard sales… Okay, truthfully I do this whenever possible. But here are my top 5 finds.

  1. Jig saw, hammer, and chamber locks (I’m gathering tools for building our Tiny House next year) Evernote Camera Roll 20141027 123502
  2. 3 tier Lazy Susan Evernote Camera Roll 20141027 123503
  3. Minion by L.A. Banks Evernote Camera Roll 20141027 123505
  4. Apple Peeler/Corer/Slicer Evernote Camera Roll 20141027 1235042
  5. Brand new Tool Belt Evernote Camera Roll 20141027 123504

This weekend I am having a yard sale too. I will be selling clothes, books (that one hurts my heart), toys, exercise equipment, and anything else I can find. Also I’m making some loaves of Cinnamon Raisin Bread, a couple of pairs of knitted arm warmers, some pop can bracelets, and any extra wire jewelry I’ve made this year to make some extra cash.

We have a trip to Children’s Hospital in Denver come November and the fund that we used to help get up there and get a room for the few days we have to stay is no longer available, luckily we have plenty of stuff to sell to help get us up there. Wish us luck, this is my first yard sale on my own. I am a wee bit nervous.

What are the five best yard sale finds you’ve found this year?
